Observe before you act

Plant problems rarely have one simple cause.

The same symptom can come from very different conditions. Use these guides to gather clues, review recent changes, and choose a cautious first step.

Start with context. Check soil moisture below the surface, available light, drainage, temperature, pests, and anything that changed recently. Avoid combining several major treatments at once.

A useful troubleshooting order

  1. Rule out an emergency. Move a plant away from freezing glass, intense heat, standing water, or an obvious pest outbreak.
  2. Check moisture and drainage. Surface colour alone is not enough; test deeper and confirm that water can leave the pot.
  3. Review the timeline. Note when the symptom started and whether the plant was moved, repotted, fed, or exposed to a seasonal change.
  4. Make one measured adjustment. Give the plant time to respond unless active decline calls for closer root or pest inspection.
